Voting early in person

  • Early voting begins 45 days before each election during office hours (normally 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, Mon–Fri) and ends at 5:00 PM on the last Saturday before the election.
  • The office is also open the last two Saturdays and the second and third Sunday before any election.
  • It works like voting at your precinct on Election Day. Bring acceptable ID or be ready to complete an ID Confirmation Statement.
  • Curbside voting (from your car) is always available to anyone with a disability, limited mobility, or over age 65.
  • Tip: vote within the first three weeks of early voting to avoid longer lines.

Voting by mail

  1. Apply online at the Virginia Department of Elections (requires a Virginia DMV-issued ID), or use the Vote By Mail Application (PDF). Fill in every field, including whether you need help casting your ballot.
  2. Return it online, or by mail, fax, or email. It must arrive by 5 PM eleven days before the election — apply earlier if you can.
  3. Ballots mail out starting 45 days before the election. If you applied after early voting began, expect yours within 7–10 business days.
  4. Mark your ballot privately (a witness may be present but isn't required), seal it in Envelope B, fill it out completely, and sign the Statement of Voter.
  5. If you asked for help reading or marking your ballot, complete, sign, and return the blue assistance form too.
  6. Hand deliver by 7:00 PM on Election Day, or mail it postmarked by Election Day and received by noon the following Friday. A secure 24/7 drop box is right outside the Voter Registration Office.

Haven't received your mail ballot in time? Call (434) 970-3250 or email vote@charlottesville.gov.
